The above sermon was originally preached by St. Gregory of Nazianzus (c. 329 - 390), Archbishop of Constantinople, on Christmas Day, 380 in the Cathedral Church of the Holy Apostles in what is now Istanbul, Turkey. Among his audience that day was the Roman Emperor Theodosius I. The sermon was read publicly in Constantinople every Christmas for the next 1,000 years. It is the 38th of his collected Orations.
